Two members of Club 5 Ski Classics exchange their experiences

The world's best juniors competed in Are in March

Two months after the conclusion of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2017 in St. Moritz (SUI) the Organising Committee presented the outcome of the event at the final debrief in Are (SWE), host of the 2019 World Championships, on 25th April.

A delegation of three representatives, led by CEO Hugo Wetzel, presented the report from St. Moritz 2017, which was held appropriately on a wintery day at the site of the next World Championships, Are in the newly expanded multi-purpose Finish Area function building.

A group of more than 50 representatives from the Are Organising Committee, Swedish Ski Association, Resort Owners Skistar and the Community of Are, as well as representatives from Cortina 2021, attended the presentation to receive valuable information and advice. The television and marketing rights holders, EBU together with Tridem, as well as representatives from Swiss Television (SRG) together with FIS representatives completed the group.

“From the beginning, St. Moritz 2017 had a clear vision for their World Championships and they more than delivered on that vision. Seeing the final report from the Organisers brought back many special memories and emphasized what an excellent event they produced ,” commented FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis.

The 2017 St. Moritz Organising Committee dove into the specific details about every aspect of hosting the World Championships, including the sport organisation, accreditation, accommodation, transportation, the permanent finish area building expansion and constructing temporary facilities, media services, spectator engagement and many other notable function areas. Also key was the wide range of legacies from the World Championships, which will serve the annual ladies’ World Cup races very well for many seasons to come.

One of the highlights identified in this fifth time of St. Moritz hosting the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, was the successful efforts of the Organisers to attract spectators through extensive services for visitors both its medal plaza area in the village and the competition venue. The Organisers and Swiss Ski successfully used the Championships as a key opportunity to promote skiing in Switzerland and a springboard for a future generation of skiers.

During the dynamic presentation, the Are 2019 team used the opportunity to learn from the experiences of the St. Moritz group and asked numerous questions.

Are 2019 Coordination Group presents updates and promotional plan

Following the St. Moritz 2017 debrief, the team of Are 2019 took centre stage, providing their status report and upcoming action plan. Led by Niklas Carlsson, Are 2019 CEO the presentation included many updates from the winter 2016/2017 season as the next World Championships are now a mere 20 months away.

Most notably, Are 2019 staged an extremely successful FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships in March, which welcomed more than 600 athletes to the Swedish village for 10 days of championship action. It was Are 2019’s first chance to fully test all of its newly constructed finish area facilities.

Also on hand for the Coordination Group meeting was a group of more than 15 students from the Are Event Management Education Programme, which got first-hand experience helping to organise the World Juniors, and also experienced a glimpse of the planning process for the 2019 World Championships.

Additionally, Are 2019 is ramping up the promotion of the World Championships on a local, national and international level. Locally, the World Juniors and next season’s World Cup Finals have increased interest in the village and surrounding regions as fans from the 2007 Alpine World Ski Championships are once again turning out to see the next generation of racers.

Nationally, the annual Stockholm City event will serve as a massive promotional tool next season in Sweden’s capital city and has already generated early interest this season. Internationally, the social media channels (#Are2019) already have impressive numbers both within Sweden and around the globe.
