Audi FIS World Cup St. Moritz: Historic Ski World Cup weekend at the Home of Championships

St. Moritz, December 22, 2024 - The Women's World Cup was held in St. Moritz on the weekend of December 21/22, 2024. While the first race on Saturday took place in ideal slope and weather conditions, the second Super-G had to be canceled due to unstable weather. Although not both races could take place as planned, the organizing committee is very satisfied with the race weekend.

Fantastic weather on Saturday, strong winds, fog and snowfall on Sunday. For the Women's Ski World Cup race weekend, this meant one Super-G with perfect conditions and a one day on which the jury and the local organizing committee decided to cancel the second planned race due to the unstable weather conditions. Despite the cancellation, OC President Robin Miozzari draws a positive balance: « Of course I was disappointed at first when it became clear that we wouldn't be able to hold the second race. However, as we had a perfect race day yesterday with a great atmosphere, the positive feelings outweigh the disappointment for me. »

Under the sun of St. Moritz, Austria's Cornelia Hütter skied to her third win of the season. She beat Lara Gut-Behrami (SUI) and Sofia Goggia (ITA) to the other podium places by 18 and 33 hundredths respectively. For the Swiss skier Gut-Behrami, this is her ninth podium finish in a World Cup race in St. Moritz, the place where she first reached the top step of the podium as a sixteen-year-old in 2008.

New ticket record
Over 5,000 ski fans welcomed the world's best female Super-G racers at the finish area in Salastrains, while a further 5,000 cheered on the athletes from the edge of the "Engiadina" piste. In total, over 13,000 visitors attended the race weekend. This set a new ticket record, confirming the upward trend that has been taking place for the past three years.

In addition to the numerous spectators, around a hundred media representatives also traveled to St. Moritz to report on the racing action. Lindsey Vonn's historic comeback also attracted media attention in the run-up to the races. The audience in Salastrains also celebrated the record-breaking Super-G winner effusively.

Baschi set the mood in the Public
After the first women's Super-G, Swiss musician Baschi fired up the crowd in St. Moritz. The fans waved their Swiss flags enthusiastically to hits such as "Bring en hei" and "Gib mer ä Chance". Afterwards, DJ Base created a great atmosphere. Former ski racers from 1974, who competed as athletes at the third Ski World Championships in St. Moritz exactly 50 years ago, were also guests on stage.

Homage to the history of in St. Moritz
90 years ago, the Corviglia ski area hosted a major ski event for the first time. The first edition in 1934 was followed by the second World Championship races as part of the 1948 Winter Olympics. Exactly 50 years ago, the third World Championships were held on the Corviglia in 1974, the fourth in 2003 and the fifth and final World Championships to date in 2017. To date, St. Moritz is the only place in the world to have hosted a total of five Alpine World Ski Championships. Welcome to the Home of Championships

To celebrate the two anniversaries, the St. Moritz Design Gallery is showing an exhibition on the impressive skiing history of the Corviglia from December to April 2025. The photographs offer a fascinating insight into the development of ski racing and illustrate how not only the skiing style and equipment but also the entire organization and marketing of these major events have revolutionized over the years.
